La Zagaleta - The most exclusive housing development in Europe
21st December 2020
La Zagaleta Country Club is the most exclusive private residential estate that money can buy in Spain, and perhaps even in Europe overall. This award-winning luxury development is located just a short drive up into the hills looking over Marbella and Puerto Banús and is undoubtedly home to some of the most impressive villas for sale anywhere in Europe.
In order to access La Zagaleta, you must pass through one of the two security booths located on the road between Benahavís and Ronda, located on the Costa del Sol in the region of Malaga. Entrance to La Zagaleta is on prior permission only, and its barrier is generally only raised for private personnel and workers of this high-end complex because most of its multi-millionaire residents arrive at their homes in style, usually by helicopter. Let’s have a look at the full panorama of life in La Zagaleta.
Property prices in La Zagaleta
Those who see themselves in this exclusive urbanisation in Spain’s Andalusia region and have millions of euros to spare have 2 options; buying a plot of land and building the house of your dreams or investing in a property that’s ready to live in.
The plots range from 3,000 to 10,000 square metres, and many of them are nestled between hills and wooded vegetation. You’ll have to pay no less than 1 million euros for a land plot, while some of the most expensive and exclusive ones can reach six million euros: for land at this price you can expect direct access to one of the two 18-hole golf courses found within the development, as well as views over the Mediterranean Sea and a glimpse of Africa and Gibraltar on a clear day.
On the other hand, if you would prefer a house that is already built, then it’s time to get saving as the most expensive mansions can cost more than 50 million euros, although the price range of the majority of villas for sale in La Zagaleta is currently between 4 and 16 million euros.
Golf in La Zagaleta
A development as exclusive as this one is of course not only home to luxury homes, but also 2 exclusive golf courses which are one of the many playgrounds for the rich and famous in the area: the 'Old Course', with 18 holes and built in 1991; and the 'New Course', inaugurated in 2005, also with 18 holes. Both golf courses are home to top level security and are only to be used by paying residents.
The main social clubs of the Zagaleta are also located within the golf courses, the Old Course Clubhouse is an "elegant and sophisticated" place where residents "dine, meet, organise events and enjoy exquisite service in a select atmosphere". Other activities that residents enjoy at their leisure include horse-riding, tennis and padel, or undisturbed walks through the woods.
Famous residents in La Zagaleta
As mentioned, there is very strict private security throughout the whole of La Zagaleta development, and for this reason, no one really knows who exactly lives in or owns houses there. It is a place where the super-rich and famous go precisely to get away from the limelight. Nevertheless, it is said that Hugh Grant, Rod Stewart and Vladimir Putin all have, or had, houses in La Zagaleta, but these are rumours and are not confirmed.
What else does La Zagaleta have to offer?
As well as the exclusive golf courses, sophisticated club houses and the exclusive surroundings of private villas and mansions, La Zagaleta is so home to its own nightclub, bars and events spaces where there is always full schedule of experiences and parties planned for residents. If you’re even planning to visit the area, take note that the facilities in the development are for exclusive use to villa owners only; they pay a hefty service charge to be allowed to use the facilities and for high levels of security.
